Every internal combustion engine relies on something to keep its metal parts from rubbing directly against one another. Engine oil fills that role, forming a thin protective layer between moving surfaces - much like lotion softens friction on skin. Without the lubricant, metal-on-metal contact generates heat and accelerates wear.
